J.D. Power Smartphone Satisfaction Rankings Topped by Apple
If you're an Apple smartphone owner, then
you're going to be somewhat smug about this next bit of news, and quite rightly
- it turns out that people are happier with their iPhone than anyone else
relying on smartphones from other manufacturers. This comes after a study polled
almost ten thousand smartphone owners to see how happy they were with their
device's ease of use, feature set, aesthetics and performance.
The average, on the 1000-point scale the
J.D. Power Smartphone Satisfaction Rankings uses, was 796, one point above
Nokia, two above Samsung, and one above Motorola. But here's where Apple brings
the pain - it came in at 855 on that scale, dominating everyone else on the
list. Even HTC didn't manage to hit the average, only reaching 790.
Of course it's worth bearing in mind that
that's a pretty impressive satisfaction rating, given those numbers - bar
Apple's - are all almost 8/10. But that Apple 8.5 has gotta hurt! The
Californian tech design company also took home the title of "our
smartphone makes people the happiest" every year from 2009 to 2011, and
has increased satisfaction since 2012.
This is a big deal for Apple, but it also
paints an accurate picture of how seriously they take customer satisfaction.
It's not just their generous and helpful approach to helping Apple customers
with any problems they might have - it's their general attitude to ensuring
that everything is as accessible and high in quality as possible. How they've
managed to knock this approach out of the park year after year isn't clear -
especially in a post-Jobs
environment where some are curious about what direction the company will
take - but it is seriously impressive.
In fact, it also tends to point to
customer satisfaction not as a boast, but as a simple fact - people tend to
find Apple's products far less complex, and the reasons it gives for why people
should choose an iPhone over
other smartphones includes the aforementioned survey as clear, unbiased
evidence that they're committed to making the best technology on the market.
It'd be interesting to see the tablet
computer chart, if anything - primarily because few tablets have even come
close to matching the iPad, and its Retina Display has once
again pushed it significantly ahead of the competition.
The challenges that lie ahead of Apple in
the coming years are those of iteration - being able to showcase significant
changes and improvements so customers don't feel like they're buying the same
phone with a few tweaks and new bells and whistles. It's a challenge they have
to face when the rest of the smartphone manufacturer's circle is putting out
many different models for different operating systems and purposes, while Apple
has stuck to its iPhone guns and had a single timeline for the product. It's
bold, and it's certainly paying off in spades, if these stats are anything to
go by.
